Hi, I'm Tanja.
Madeira is my home.

There are places that ask something of you. Madeira is one of them. Mountains plunging into the Atlantic. Levada paths disappearing into cloud. Clifftops where the ocean stretches blue and endless to the horizon. The scent of eucalyptus and sea salt in the air, and a pace of life that feels – finally – like the right one.

I heard that call. I came to Madeira with my two children, a self-built van, and the deep conviction that life could be lived differently. What I created here – FortunaVanTours – is less a service than an invitation: to stop watching the island from a hotel balcony and actually step into it.

My guests describe it as unforgettable. Again and again. That doesn't happen by accident.

Beyond the van, I am a Sifu – a master instructor in Kung Fu and Wu Taiji. I lead nature retreats and drum journeys on Madeira, weaving movement, stillness and wild landscape into experiences that stay with you long after you've left the island. If you feel called to go deeper, that door is open.

Frequently asked questions

The Fortuna Van comes fully equipped: bed with linen, kitchenette with gas hob and fridge, cooking basics (oil, spices, coffee), solar power and a water tank. Before your departure you receive curated QR-code route maps via WhatsApp, handpicked insider spots that are exclusively shared with our guests. During your trip our WhatsApp support channel is open around the clock.

Pick-up takes place in Madalena do Mar, Madeira. We hand over the van personally, you get a full walk-through of everything on board, your route maps, and all the tips you need for the road. Plan around 30,45 minutes for the handover so you can set off relaxed and well-prepared.

A standard category B car licence is sufficient. Drivers must be at least 25 years old and have held their licence for a minimum of 2 years. Some experience with larger vehicles is helpful, Madeira's mountain roads can be narrow and winding.

The minimum tour duration is 3 nights. The longer you stay, the better the nightly rate: from 5 nights you save around 6%, from 7 nights around 9–10%, and from 14 nights up to 18–19% depending on the season. Madeira rewards those who take their time – the island reveals itself slowly.

Third-party liability and fully comprehensive insurance are included in the price. The excess in the event of a claim is €800. For an additional €15 per day the excess can be reduced to €0, we recommend this option, especially for first-time van travellers.

Our curated route maps include handpicked overnight spots, places that are legal, scenic, and known to us from personal experience. Wild camping is not permitted on Madeira. These insider locations are exclusively shared with our guests and are one of the highlights of the FortunaVanTours experience.

Cancellations up to 7 days before departure are free of charge. Within 7 days we retain 50 % of the total price. We understand that plans change, if you need to rebook to a different date, just get in touch via WhatsApp and we will find a solution together.
